Lantern chile, or deng long jiao, are a popular chili pepper from Hunan province in China. They are fat, round, and have a moderate heat, with a deep-red color and a fragrant, earthy aroma. They are usually used dried in dishes such as Chongqing chicken (la zi ji), where their red color provides visual "pop" to the dish.
They are rated at around 500 - 1,000 on the Scoville heat scale.
