Neutral spirit or rectified spirit is a pure alcohol (ethanol) with no flavoring or other ingredients. The practical concentration of neutral spirit is 97.2% alcohol by volume, as attempts to distill it past this point will not increase the concentration of ethanol.
Neutral spirits are used as inputs to many manufactured beverages, including blended whiskey, gin, some liqueurs, and many bitters.
When neutral spirits are derived from grains, they are called
neutral grain spirit. When they are made from grapes, or byproducts of wine production, they are called grape neutral spirit or vinous alcohol.
