Traditionally, children leave their shoes out by the fireplace or door, expecting Sinterklaas to fill them with sweets or small gifts. Festivities typically include special treats like pepernoten (spiced cookies), chocolate letters, and marzipan. Sinterklaasavond is a time for playful exchanges of gifts, where presents are often disguised or accompanied by clues and riddles.
