Sinterklaasavond

Sinterklaasavond, or Saint Nicholas Eve, is celebrated on the evening of December 5th in the Netherlands and December 6th in Belgium. It is a festive occasion marking the eve of Saint Nicholas’ feast day, during which families and friends exchange gifts, often accompanied by humorous or heartfelt poems. The celebration is centered around Sinterklaas, a figure similar to Santa Claus, who is said to bring presents to well-behaved children. Traditionally, children leave their shoes out by the fireplace or door, expecting Sinterklaas to fill them with sweets or small gifts. Festivities typically include special treats like pepernoten (spiced cookies), chocolate letters, and marzipan. Sinterklaasavond is a time for playful exchanges of gifts, where presents are often disguised or accompanied by clues and riddles.
