Southern bluefin tuna is a species of tuna found in the southern hemisphere of all oceans. Like all bluefin tuna, it is a highly prized commercial fish and and is heavily targeted for the Japanese seafood market.

Conservation status

Southern bluefin tuna were subject to severe overfishing through the 20th century, with stocks declining by 92%. The Convention for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna, an agreement between Australian, New Zealand, and Japan, was agreed to in 1994, which enforced steep quotas, but population levels have been slow to recover.
Southern bluefin tuna are rated AVOID by all seafood sustainability programs.
