Yaki karē (焼きカレー) is a Japanese dish that consists of curry rice baked with a layer of cheese or egg on top. Originating from the city of Kitakyushu in Fukuoka Prefecture, yaki karē gained popularity in the mid-20th century.
The primary ingredients include Japanese curry (typically made with a roux, meat such as beef or chicken, potatoes, carrots, and onions), steamed white rice, and a topping of grated cheese and/or egg.
Once assembled, the dish is baked in an oven or broiler until the cheese is melted and lightly browned. Yaki karē combines the flavors of traditional Japanese curry with a gratin-style preparation.
