Anise, or aniseed, is widely cultivated spice used in cooking, drinks, and candies, where it conveys a strong licorice flavor. Note that anise is not the same as star anise, an unrelated species, but both herbs have high concentrations of anethole, the essential oil that bears the licorice scent.
